In fact, you can play the game as a "PvP arena" where individual players fight against each other (which you can spice up by creating a deck of ability cards), or you can play two campaigns against the game: one solo and one in two-player co-op.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="456" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/3lRbzYglVoQ" width="548" youtube-src-id="3lRbzYglVoQ"></iframe></div><p>___________________________________________</p><p>If you enjoyed this video and my content, <a href="https://ko-fi.com/potan" target="_blank">please consider supporting me on Kofi</a>! </p><p>Or become<a href=" https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCS_e1KVkuo8y1mLwEVI3i9g/join" target="_blank"> my Youtube Channel member</a>!</p><p>___________________________________________</p><p>Or, as official description: Senjutsu is a 1-4 Player Samurai Duelling Game with slick Deck Construction mechanics, simultaneous reveal combat and beautiful miniatures from a panel of sculptors. Control 1 of 4 fearsome Samurai, warriors bound to the Bushido Code, each with their own strengths, weaknesses, and motivations.</p><p>Using Senjutsu's Deck Construction Mechanics, forge a unique deck of devastating attacks, powerful blocks, timely mediations, and dynamic special moves. The intuitive card-classifying system makes forging your Samurai’s Ability Deck easy.</p><p>The Core Box includes dozens of different Ability Cards to shape your chosen Samurai's fighting style. There are thousands of possible deck combinations available.</p>Potanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07088017444911956449noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1505582236897560310.post-29358030172881989022024-03-14T18:08:00.009+01:002024-03-14T19:55:54.244+01:00In Country (Core/Narative) - Ultramodern wargaming AAR Pics<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgByWnXuhm8zQ49cycy8Y7kPxaxW0I3xS7z1a-4LPFjsZixkucbelRzu3f6WzneUDQD02f8mCEn2nf1aStmWT1ZdPvm_JvoPN3sfY2EnFfOQf44Ork1nexnWI-emm8kcEMMnjBOBj5xJjvpMVN4aDM0NjUETuH0vM11IyPqExkJDlf98gMIRTacQJ9agSb5/s4608/IMG_20240307_180112.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3456" data-original-width="4608" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgByWnXuhm8zQ49cycy8Y7kPxaxW0I3xS7z1a-4LPFjsZixkucbelRzu3f6WzneUDQD02f8mCEn2nf1aStmWT1ZdPvm_JvoPN3sfY2EnFfOQf44Ork1nexnWI-emm8kcEMMnjBOBj5xJjvpMVN4aDM0NjUETuH0vM11IyPqExkJDlf98gMIRTacQJ9agSb5/w640-h480/IMG_20240307_180112.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>Just couple of pics from latest game of Incountry with Hayden in Pilsner. The game allows players to take on the role of commanders in larger skirmishes, primarily with 28mm figures. For the second edition of Saga, the game's publisher Studio Tomahawk has switched to the model it follows for its other main game, Muskets and Tomahawks, which is that it publishes "generic rulebooks" that describe the basic mechanics of the game (i.e. how to move, fight, shoot, etc.) without rules for armies, and then publishes books with rules for units.</p><p>___________________________________________</p><p>If you enjoyed this video and my content, <a href="https://ko-fi.com/potan" target="_blank">please consider supporting me on Kofi</a>! </p><p>Or <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCS_e1KVkuo8y1mLwEVI3i9g/join" target="_blank">become my Youtube Channel member</a>! </p><div id="gtx-trans" style="left: 15px; position: absolute; top: 1180.2px;"><div class="gtx-trans-icon"></div></div>Potanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07088017444911956449noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1505582236897560310.post-57221651190155780542024-03-05T12:16:00.016+01:002024-03-05T12:16:00.134+01:00Senjutsu: Battle for Japan - review of challenging Samurai fencing<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjifrvHmbI6AUaLXmkrt4DpDmX-ApDTAMpkM8lXotJklUq-_iz3Ow-5KS2P272J86-2uPZq8k2QHCQOfqcRHPxerap7qFK-GDzK0xTlz9iWdlKci0_fbqvgrVFEVP2tQeFxD7yQf_FesZfOs7W6CYhWiAL74D2S0psPDKJ-wNtwsCe7I2t2E89CEnK-fMP5/s4201/IMG_20240213_225352.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2359" data-original-width="4201" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjifrvHmbI6AUaLXmkrt4DpDmX-ApDTAMpkM8lXotJklUq-_iz3Ow-5KS2P272J86-2uPZq8k2QHCQOfqcRHPxerap7qFK-GDzK0xTlz9iWdlKci0_fbqvgrVFEVP2tQeFxD7yQf_FesZfOs7W6CYhWiAL74D2S0psPDKJ-wNtwsCe7I2t2E89CEnK-fMP5/w640-h360/IMG_20240213_225352.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>Senjutsu: Battle for Japan is a rather unique game in one respect - there are actually two games in the box with vastly different experiences but identical systems. In fact, you can play the game as a "PvP arena" where individual players fight against each other (which you can spice up by creating a deck of ability cards), or you can play two campaigns against the game: one solo and one in two-player co-op.</p><p>The rules are quite difficult to read and play for the first time and the recommended age of 14+ is not there for fun. They're not easy to read, there's a lot of terms and pictograms, effects, continuity... Once you get into them after 1-2 games, you're good to go, but the beginning is really fiddly. </p><p>And the rules aren't just hard to read and learn, but also to apply them well in practice, as the board game is also gameplay challenging, and it's no walk in the park, with your samurai gracefully making his way through a bunch of enemies. Here you have to think ahead, guess what your opponent will do and really think about where to stand, where to turn and how to attack.</p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Draw your katanas</h3><p>At the core of the game are fighters (there are four to choose from in the base game) with different abilities, stats and play styles. Each character chooses their activation cards, which are shuffled into a deck from which you draw them to your hand. At the beginning of each round, players secretly select one card to play simultaneously with their opponents, and the effects of the cards are evaluated in turn according to the cards' initiative.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuwD_QWGkawEwMSIiDSUQIN86lgExu448e9Wsy9HjafC4BtubUSJffklaqZeIMN-f0PwNyJALXw4nduJ0HMUWqHAwbiRyYKwxwanTFyg8EUQbEi3bg6ex0Hhyphenhyphene5gxDu-6c9nv2AM5Cynxu64FcUp0r9U4YuhtUnWgCG5vKnaZdhWR01aLO8cb6JEC4tQIa/s4608/IMG_20240122_173931.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2590" data-original-width="4608" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuwD_QWGkawEwMSIiDSUQIN86lgExu448e9Wsy9HjafC4BtubUSJffklaqZeIMN-f0PwNyJALXw4nduJ0HMUWqHAwbiRyYKwxwanTFyg8EUQbEi3bg6ex0Hhyphenhyphene5gxDu-6c9nv2AM5Cynxu64FcUp0r9U4YuhtUnWgCG5vKnaZdhWR01aLO8cb6JEC4tQIa/w640-h360/IMG_20240122_173931.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>There are cards for movement, defence and attack, or combinations of these. And when you attack your opponent, you're done by playing a card - no dice rolling, he simply gets hit unless he has a blocking card in his hand. But blocking is not obvious, as it only works on attacks in a certain direction. So a flanking card won't protect you in any way if the enemy attacks directly. At that point, you just have to take the hit. </p><p>And getting hit is no fun. Heroes have five lives, and there are attacks that take more than one life, or go chained together in a single activation. You can be unlucky and only take maybe two hits and die, which makes Senjutsu: Battle for Japan a pretty quick and brutal game, with one game taking under half an hour. </p><p>A special feature of the game is the "Kamae system" or combat stances, which affect the action cards played (adding bonuses to them or being directly linked to them). This makes playing the game feel like playing a video game souls game, or better yet, Ghost of Tsushima. So not only do you have to think about your turn and your opponent's turn, i.e. where to stand, but you also have to plan ideally two or so rounds in advance the appropriate positions for what you will do in the distant future.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisyViNMRmhRT-6R4mO21k6w3UUYXI_rH_S7cszoqYqPbkE7S8SJHMMBPyeYO7GfIJI0-VY9bA_oUnxsb5yKZuUScZWHFv-Hfck-sVvuAIneC-aOi5E2e2fO84rdIeapkSneLN0UyW466QZCRgMyN3pKgmUxYi-ou0uPXFsPr07FyRHkMDtkgvEbM0_UotN/s4608/IMG_20240122_183028.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2590" data-original-width="4608" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisyViNMRmhRT-6R4mO21k6w3UUYXI_rH_S7cszoqYqPbkE7S8SJHMMBPyeYO7GfIJI0-VY9bA_oUnxsb5yKZuUScZWHFv-Hfck-sVvuAIneC-aOi5E2e2fO84rdIeapkSneLN0UyW466QZCRgMyN3pKgmUxYi-ou0uPXFsPr07FyRHkMDtkgvEbM0_UotN/w640-h360/IMG_20240122_183028.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>Playing against an opponent is easy and there is nothing to go wrong, except what the players themselves cause. However, solo and cooperative play has its pitfalls. While in PvP each player chooses their own activation card at will, in these modes individual enemies have their own smaller decks from which the top card is always drawn completely at random.</p><p>In the third mission of the solo campaign, where the player first encounters a "boss" in the form of another game character with whom to have a classic duel, the random card unloading meant that my opponent and I met in the middle of the arena on the first round, and while I was slashing away at him, the game was only pulling out movement and boost cards for my enemy, but no attacks. So I calmly attacked him while he stood helplessly in front of me until he fell. And that's not exactly fun. </p><p>But otherwise, the story campaign, solo or co-op, is fun. It also has increasing difficulty and a nice story, complete with a comic book. The campaign itself will last players for a few mostly enjoyable hours.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxwfV62xt-VT3GdWaLdF6GBmObfZsTTQRswr0VhxfEazIf0zTHqMXSkx3x1_vGXzke7Ll9knbN-vyNpCFOxxe7ddzk6FQQno5vwPHmYNnpPWOlRI9vhf8moVXlnIU2qSwn5eAiCNKrLG0_NOwuROI-CK227DFe9RGKNSfNgZsvY3MqrJBHMgc3gXHwuJwR/s4608/IMG_20240122_173942.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2590" data-original-width="4608" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxwfV62xt-VT3GdWaLdF6GBmObfZsTTQRswr0VhxfEazIf0zTHqMXSkx3x1_vGXzke7Ll9knbN-vyNpCFOxxe7ddzk6FQQno5vwPHmYNnpPWOlRI9vhf8moVXlnIU2qSwn5eAiCNKrLG0_NOwuROI-CK227DFe9RGKNSfNgZsvY3MqrJBHMgc3gXHwuJwR/w640-h360/IMG_20240122_173942.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>PvP mode can then be played in theory indefinitely. Senjutsu: Battle for Japan features 4 heroes who have dozens of their own special abilities and weapons, plus another hundred generic cards. So there's really a lot of opportunity to piece together a deck of abilities for your hero to suit your play style and have fun playing. And when you get tired of them, you simply try something else.</p><p>The only problem with the PvP mode is that the game is really hard and you have to think about it, even if you already know the rules. So playing with a newbie is the proverbial beating of a dead horse. It's really very tactical and the mechanics take some time to sink in, so the only way to get the ideal gameplay experience against a live opponent is to be at a similar level - either you're all learning the game together or you've all got the same game experience.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX7gjF1MSyfd57kJ0nLxpiQ6Qeo240ktJF6MziYRpFMtB74E5QjCodt8EKZCq36wKJI2JInWSknY_2E9auocTBpSldWj5AbRug4dlT3NW4rpKAn3o_brI1Pq7N8Tln72xxdemnNwAyB-Dy-32xhf6tcMZyelcCtikyoCnGPegvpv4Iqf3jnSfnrH9vQ9OK/s4124/IMG_20240122_193328.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2315" data-original-width="4124" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX7gjF1MSyfd57kJ0nLxpiQ6Qeo240ktJF6MziYRpFMtB74E5QjCodt8EKZCq36wKJI2JInWSknY_2E9auocTBpSldWj5AbRug4dlT3NW4rpKAn3o_brI1Pq7N8Tln72xxdemnNwAyB-Dy-32xhf6tcMZyelcCtikyoCnGPegvpv4Iqf3jnSfnrH9vQ9OK/w640-h360/IMG_20240122_193328.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>Which is easier to arrange with one friend, but you can play the game with up to four players, where unfamiliarity with the systems becomes all the more apparent. So it's definitely not a game you just pull out in front of a friend with the idea of " measuring up samurais". On the other hand, you don't have to immediately taunt him in a duel, but instead reach for the co-op campaign, which will be a more enjoyable initiation for a newcomer after all.</p><p>The Retail version of Senjutsu: Battle for Japan is a deluxe edition of the kickstarter campaign, so in addition to four nice samurai figures in circa 28mm, it also has terrain miniatures to enhance the arenas, such as a bamboo field, burning carts, rocks or booby traps, which is a very nice bonus that adds plasticity to the game area and complements the overall experience.</p><p>Unfortunately, the soldier figures intended for the story campaign are just cardboard boxes in a stand, but since the game is made in regular wargaming scale, it's no problem to swap them for some ashigar figures if you own them or can buy them purely for the game. Feudal Japan is one of the popular periods, so there is a plethora of options on the market. And in the same way, Senjutsu heroes can be used as samurai characters for wargaming.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsE1LwcNLdiCs-VwHkFgxPUl_22GihSIsEIZsWCIrlq1b07Nsh2mLTNpTpGKar0Qennld95ULv-A4k4a2eeiXBxoLJ-V0-nTNFweyTZBa4ZkYBMyRYBnDG5rw7x7DISaUjskeDbRtimMEYcppY3Qw9Iogkik6l1nrfAQd5BLNfPLFtF8VoToisX4W8B0Vb/s4608/IMG_20240202_200717.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2590" data-original-width="4608" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsE1LwcNLdiCs-VwHkFgxPUl_22GihSIsEIZsWCIrlq1b07Nsh2mLTNpTpGKar0Qennld95ULv-A4k4a2eeiXBxoLJ-V0-nTNFweyTZBa4ZkYBMyRYBnDG5rw7x7DISaUjskeDbRtimMEYcppY3Qw9Iogkik6l1nrfAQd5BLNfPLFtF8VoToisX4W8B0Vb/w640-h360/IMG_20240202_200717.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>Finally, just a reminder that if the base game appeals to you and four samurai aren't enough, you can add more in the Shadows of Steel and Calm Before the Storm expansions.</p><h2 style="text-align: left;">Verdict:</h2><p>Senjutsu: Battle for Japan is a nice board game that really offers the feeling of controlling a samurai in a duel. You have to plan his moves, slashes, defenses, and stances while thinking not only about what your opponent will do after you, but what your moves will be in the next few rounds. Additionally, if you don't have a live opponent, there are two nice campaigns against the game that will keep you entertained for a few evenings on their own. And as an added bonus, the game has some very nice game pieces. The only drawbacks are the randomness of the PvE mode and the fact that the game is quite difficult to play, newcomers won't get the hang of it, and it doesn't help that the rules themselves aren't written in the clearest way.</p><p><i>Also, if you find this article helpful, <a href="https://ko-fi.com/potan" target="_blank">you can just buy me coffee</a>. :) </i></p><p><i>Originally published in <a href="https://www.zestolu.cz/deskovky/senjutsu-bitva-o-japonsko-recenze-narocneho-sermovani-573615" target="_blank">Czech on the ZeStolu por</a></i><a href="https://www.zestolu.cz/deskovky/senjutsu-bitva-o-japonsko-recenze-narocneho-sermovani-573615" target="_blank">tal</a>.</p>Potanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07088017444911956449noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1505582236897560310.post-27894834918336528472024-03-04T12:12:00.001+01:002024-03-04T12:12:00.136+01:00Unboxing the Lords of Ragnarok Board Game<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5Kt8cHkGVcCIaCNWE2aaYCA-UgCULXM-A1ZSDipOytaEgc1lL38Gt2zaVKLKUTUpAsjDUh3o7YLMYmlfnfNVtmV2JkSimijymGmZpr25H8ZtrTuGsX-HQtXq_RPiBRUkRwn46YT9FsSXoDz1Pxqehr9MBvkbAeR2VhCLasL8ngmtLYmYUfyb8BrDLL_Fk/s1173/Kopie%20n%C3%A1vrhu%20Potan%20d%C4%9Bl%C3%A1%20youtube%20(1).png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="660" data-original-width="1173" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5Kt8cHkGVcCIaCNWE2aaYCA-UgCULXM-A1ZSDipOytaEgc1lL38Gt2zaVKLKUTUpAsjDUh3o7YLMYmlfnfNVtmV2JkSimijymGmZpr25H8ZtrTuGsX-HQtXq_RPiBRUkRwn46YT9FsSXoDz1Pxqehr9MBvkbAeR2VhCLasL8ngmtLYmYUfyb8BrDLL_Fk/w640-h360/Kopie%20n%C3%A1vrhu%20Potan%20d%C4%9Bl%C3%A1%20youtube%20(1).png" width="640" /></a></div><p>Welcome to my latest unboxing, this time we enter Ragnarok! </p><p>Its not paid/promo video, so just honest opinions from normal guy.</p><p>As per official description: In this 1-4 player strategic board game, you will lead a unique, asymmetric hero and their army, trying to be the ultimate victor in a war that unfolds over approximately 120 minutes. And Safari Splash is just such a game! Although you wouldn't expect it, it even has a story behind it - you go on a river safari and you and your friends race to see who can take the most pictures of their favourite animal.</p><p>And that's what the mechanics of the game are built on. You compose your "path" from the squares of rivers that have pictures of animals on the banks. Depending on the difficulty of the game (there are four in total), you need to arrange the river in such a way that your favourite animals meet at it, and in the hardest version you can even solve their combinations.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrIRkToNKuPE_u9fmJTt7y59UITkLRN0KbbSyGP_pUUeNYldnU3A-WJkUYYcuicvaHJm-cWE9pGfsExE_1B1A_fZiTKyhz4iBh0u5o7UH-mj3dhjIwgSL19XvesgWxYOL_zMRHYtHyIJb0Q_Hl4GanuVnqwKTWQVP1JovorH5xiST6rRZZkbJyG-DJYZTN/s2737/IMG_20240115_173157_edit_160700865667602.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1539" data-original-width="2737" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrIRkToNKuPE_u9fmJTt7y59UITkLRN0KbbSyGP_pUUeNYldnU3A-WJkUYYcuicvaHJm-cWE9pGfsExE_1B1A_fZiTKyhz4iBh0u5o7UH-mj3dhjIwgSL19XvesgWxYOL_zMRHYtHyIJb0Q_Hl4GanuVnqwKTWQVP1JovorH5xiST6rRZZkbJyG-DJYZTN/w640-h360/IMG_20240115_173157_edit_160700865667602.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>At the same time, you have to be careful not to let an animal you don't like wander in front of the camera, because you will lose points. In addition to that, you have to think about modifiers for pairs, trios and quads of the same animal next to each other and... that's it.</p><p>The game only lasts 90 seconds, during which time you assemble your river from the pile of available cards in the center of the table (on the back of which you see 3 of the possible 2 animals that will be on the face), and after the timer runs out you just add up the points for "your" animals, subtract the points for the unliked animal, and check the pairs/triples/fours, and you're done. You can ride the river again!</p><p>In addition to the classic river and animal cards, there are also so-called splash cards, which mean that you have to shout "Splash!" and everyone at the table exchanges cards from their hand with their opponents. And that's really it. No more tricks or complexities.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1IzqaWKYf5___vTWYChnD_VFppVF_2pjOSMOcpcSRvHalJhrEBfVkP9kFOAbQsMa4tIK_ieL6zYCoBVKbXg29oXW-9e9-F0vnzYTWx5OZAVkzWzScvH2YNQEtDXkSvZBl1qRw2yS4pMzlaN8BetMmI8L2n9D70Xkkuq4rcjUMVPAzj_7FPF5aJiO_4v9V/s4604/IMG_20240115_172150_edit_160731753326757.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2587" data-original-width="4604" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1IzqaWKYf5___vTWYChnD_VFppVF_2pjOSMOcpcSRvHalJhrEBfVkP9kFOAbQsMa4tIK_ieL6zYCoBVKbXg29oXW-9e9-F0vnzYTWx5OZAVkzWzScvH2YNQEtDXkSvZBl1qRw2yS4pMzlaN8BetMmI8L2n9D70Xkkuq4rcjUMVPAzj_7FPF5aJiO_4v9V/w640-h360/IMG_20240115_172150_edit_160731753326757.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>Safari Splash is a quick family game where you just can't manage to get bored in a minute and a half. And the more games you play in a row, the more you even then get confused as to which animal you love and hate this round, which adds even more fun to the game. In half an hour you've played 10+ games and can move on to another game, so this is the perfect filler or fine choice for when you don't even have that half hour.</p><p>The game has really cute graphics, where the animals are tasteful, adorable and simply a joy to look at. Aside from the rules themselves (which I've already managed to explain in all their (in)complexity), the game is completely textless, with just pictures, so the recommended age of 6+ fits and there's no problem playing the game with kids who can't read much. For its price, it's quality fun that will entertain.</p><h2 style="text-align: left;">Verdict:</h2><p>All in all, Safari Splash offers quality entertainment at an affordable price, both for kids and adults looking for quick and instantly accessible games. With simple rules and short games, the game is suitable for children's parties as well as among adults who need to stave off boredom.</p><p><i>Also, if you find this article helpful, you <a href="https://ko-fi.com/potan" target="_blank">can just buy me coffee</a>. :) </i></p><p><i>Originally published in <a href="https://www.zestolu.cz/deskovky/cakle-safari-recenze-devadesativterinove-kratochvile-pro-deti-a-rodice-572103" target="_blank">Czech on the ZeStolu portal</a>.</i></p>Potanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07088017444911956449noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1505582236897560310.post-75314695227398394632024-02-25T11:43:00.010+01:002024-02-25T11:43:45.182+01:00Why is Inquisitor: Martyr is the Worst Warhammer 40K Game I Can't Even Try?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPccNZPZ2XkS0sZ4DQpa-1ZcMEO4AUkRQuMWCazOpdicjUc5ngLFL-uhs-Am3HfXHAdO8niCsMo_SvYZdAo0MHYCfw5HX1DDymgLfVuRFrZc6hKemAFpsW1IbhePdm7SavwEn0PMfGMRsfSYZIFZ5RuFpHQ_ZunSJYcFb9-Xk17rBGVADfoVVAINKPANYR/s1173/Kopie%20n%C3%A1vrhu%20Potan%20d%C4%9Bl%C3%A1%20youtube%20(2).png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="660" data-original-width="1173" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPccNZPZ2XkS0sZ4DQpa-1ZcMEO4AUkRQuMWCazOpdicjUc5ngLFL-uhs-Am3HfXHAdO8niCsMo_SvYZdAo0MHYCfw5HX1DDymgLfVuRFrZc6hKemAFpsW1IbhePdm7SavwEn0PMfGMRsfSYZIFZ5RuFpHQ_ZunSJYcFb9-Xk17rBGVADfoVVAINKPANYR/w640-h360/Kopie%20n%C3%A1vrhu%20Potan%20d%C4%9Bl%C3%A1%20youtube%20(2).png" width="640" /></a></div><p>I just wanted to take nostalgia 40k pill and enjoy same good Warhammer 40k videogame. Be warned, though, Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game is not the kind of uncomplicated fun for the whole family that the cover and artwork might suggest. That's because the cheerful zoo on the box, the animal-shaped wooden figures and the age 13+ on the packaging suggest that this will be just the sort of family-friendly, relaxed game where you can build enclosures and raise animals with your kids. And that really isn't the case.</p><p>It's a dense Euro game with virtually no dice rolling, where you do build enclosures in the zoo and put animals in them, but instead of a relaxing experience you've got a full-on grind where you'll be fighting for every winning point on the leaderboard. There are even three of these - the two main ones (conservation and popularity) which determine the ultimate winner of the game, and then education, which doesn't win the game on its own but gives you extra points towards the other two.</p><p>Interestingly, your final score corresponds to the scale where you have the least points, so you have to collect points in everything, ideally evenly, and so it's not possible to leave any of the components out completely.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1SZsEUXwzL88q-L_c-iSx5ToHSzK9g_Ncb9-OVe42adxAX9pIAs2NdRVOXcvx7pxqU9GeMWmWXjvJkAnG60FV5Od54kgOwwXgFFYKonQCCmEHNf6UpGf5psCuyqKwuvEcb7_CvusKcBdOEr1FJf9LUYZviewCAl8738K5pPqwBoF8Fi7yRx_8sXQ62nrI/s4604/IMG_20231127_232203_edit_73697202361989.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2588" data-original-width="4604" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1SZsEUXwzL88q-L_c-iSx5ToHSzK9g_Ncb9-OVe42adxAX9pIAs2NdRVOXcvx7pxqU9GeMWmWXjvJkAnG60FV5Od54kgOwwXgFFYKonQCCmEHNf6UpGf5psCuyqKwuvEcb7_CvusKcBdOEr1FJf9LUYZviewCAl8738K5pPqwBoF8Fi7yRx_8sXQ62nrI/w640-h360/IMG_20231127_232203_edit_73697202361989.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>Learning the rules is a long game in itself. Explaining all the mechanics in a YouTube video usually takes around one to two hours, and the game time is roughly twice as long. It has to be said that despite the density of the rules and a bunch of micromanagement, the game does flow quite well and in two players (after a few games, of course) you'll get to the 2-3 hours indicated on the box. </p><p>I'll try to briefly describe the rules so you understand the basic mechanics, but don't drown in the text, because there are so many different rules. Plus, the game doesn't go completely player friendly, because a lot of similar things have unnecessarily different rules.</p><p>For example, there are four types of boxes (animal shelters and various contact points for visitors) that you place in enclosures, some of which score the same way, others differently, which is where the iconography gets confusing, as it is the same for the boxes that score differently.</p><p>Furthermore, these patterns are spread out over three pages of rules and it's only in the fourth game that we finally get to experience them and start playing the game properly, so beware of this and I wish you'd figure this part of the game out as soon as possible and not get lost in the different but similar systems.</p><h2 style="text-align: left;">Seven years, four seasons</h2><p>The game is divided into seven rounds, which have four phases according to the seasons. In spring, a random event card is drawn (which might be bird flu or a popular movie at the cinema about animals that get bonus popularity) and then the babies are born. This is the only mechanic of the game where dice are rolled (offspring are simply no sure thing).</p><p>The summer follows, when animals are bought or sold at the auction, with the amount of each species offered and demanded changing from year to year. Since we're playing as zoos and not smugglers, all animals are free (thematically there are exchanges between zoos around the world), you're just limited to two transactions per round as a player.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_O6ybfbRPmbWqIFfgIRv4_cQQLCAV8JgCef8Yr1ZIw-T8J5v4Md42ygWY2j7mKEXvNY4ZjF9mwMmnE7BiaF0lNd_jbvoE6wI0qW5j152-TuFgcqI9u9VI66egy5WCKDO5EnDcbXXANVHn6GnOWLS0jRV36ZPQhv_zWubfOjwjJt3l-58kHoPj8IMaJvS8/s4604/IMG_20231128_104712_edit_73658436303463.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2587" data-original-width="4604" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_O6ybfbRPmbWqIFfgIRv4_cQQLCAV8JgCef8Yr1ZIw-T8J5v4Md42ygWY2j7mKEXvNY4ZjF9mwMmnE7BiaF0lNd_jbvoE6wI0qW5j152-TuFgcqI9u9VI66egy5WCKDO5EnDcbXXANVHn6GnOWLS0jRV36ZPQhv_zWubfOjwjJt3l-58kHoPj8IMaJvS8/w640-h360/IMG_20231128_104712_edit_73658436303463.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>This is where the first tactic comes in, because there won't always be enough animals available to open an enclosure right away (each species has a set lower limit on the number of animals). Will you take a chance and stockpile them, knowing that they won't be of any use to you this round and hoping that they will be on offer next round? Or would you rather take an "inferior" animal, but one that will immediately entertain visitors? Of course, you also have the option to buy animals that you don't need but don't want your opponents to get.</p><p>In the autumn, shops and enclosures are built and the purchased animals are released into them, which in practice is much more complicated than this simple sentence would suggest, because each field and each animal changes many things: the happiness of the animals in the enclosure, the maintenance of the zoo, the enthusiasm of the visitors and, depending on the surrounding buildings, your final score (whether it is conservation, education or popularity). And fall is logically followed by winter, when you mainly count points, pay taxes, and receive admission revenue for the next year. </p><div><h2 style="text-align: left;">Tough zoo care</h2><div>It may not sound that complicated, but there are a plethora of metrics to check throughout the game that are constantly changing, making the game longer. Every round you're building something, adding something somewhere, and all sorts of stats and little numbers keep changing. Likewise, you have to keep looking for components in a pile, a really huge pile, of cardboard and wooden meeples.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDHHP3qqK0tiVc3SkReUnhe6rRQZUDwth0szL4CvglFkhfie9IyJymtQhD4-TEG7_wc18mmylRnM0iXlGqsI1zo3eupn5v2Hlp-wkPJAnWTd3PNZrrpMKx0cl2As3BP7x1aTZCD14gdVKDda0TvzgrevYmmqcwMCEiYzvh4U_nltUqnQ3Nd9ajpMW1MiQ2/s4604/IMG_20231128_104717_edit_73642243875344.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2587" data-original-width="4604" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDHHP3qqK0tiVc3SkReUnhe6rRQZUDwth0szL4CvglFkhfie9IyJymtQhD4-TEG7_wc18mmylRnM0iXlGqsI1zo3eupn5v2Hlp-wkPJAnWTd3PNZrrpMKx0cl2As3BP7x1aTZCD14gdVKDda0TvzgrevYmmqcwMCEiYzvh4U_nltUqnQ3Nd9ajpMW1MiQ2/w640-h360/IMG_20231128_104717_edit_73642243875344.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>An example for all: You have a new zebra. You expand the zebra's enclosure by one field so you have somewhere to put the baby. To do that, you have to find the right biome expansion box. Then you replace the cub token with the correct gendered adult, adjust the zoo maintenance for the new addition, and change the happiness coefficient for the animals based on the number of animals.</div></div><p>It may not sound like a lot of tasks, but considering that you'll be doing this for virtually every interaction in the zoo, and ideally several times per round, and it's not exactly an immersive activity, it's a bit exhausting.</p><p>What's completely off-putting for me, though, is the fact that Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game is for up to four players, but even playing with two we found ourselves running out of animals in the last few rounds. And we were each keeping different ones. In theory, each of the four players can breed the same kind of animal, but when one is able to use up the game's supply, something is wrong.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_K1jFSP-oO8BxGXEecctUOXAEILgTe0T5jIM0j1ZWTRxPvJ-iv592rI6UTqUHA77p8dj5dJ2y-TLeoUNqvWYtshf5tkClOjxkNQ8c9Qcax1Q8ODnw2f_d8i7ydkmCuAMM9I6ttc54R1WkqRAMatY97r0Ys2sYiDIzrG5sA9JsphGhSE45lIKNLuNzyvdF/s4183/IMG_20231128_123229_edit_73516413936173.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2351" data-original-width="4183" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_K1jFSP-oO8BxGXEecctUOXAEILgTe0T5jIM0j1ZWTRxPvJ-iv592rI6UTqUHA77p8dj5dJ2y-TLeoUNqvWYtshf5tkClOjxkNQ8c9Qcax1Q8ODnw2f_d8i7ydkmCuAMM9I6ttc54R1WkqRAMatY97r0Ys2sYiDIzrG5sA9JsphGhSE45lIKNLuNzyvdF/w640-h360/IMG_20231128_123229_edit_73516413936173.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>So there aren't a few in the box at all, but in short, there should have been more so that their limitations wouldn't have come so easily. Luckily, all those different types of animals are housed in their own printed paper boxes, which help with clarity and fit nicely in the box. If it weren't for one huge BUT.</p><p>There are no compartments in the box for the enclosure boxes, which realistically represent half of the tokens, so it's a terrible mess anyway. When I searched the internet for what I should ideally do with that mound of tokens so that I wouldn't have to hunt them down from all corners of the box after carrying the game, I found that it was a mistake on the part of the creators who forgot to put the intended pouches in the box. Which, for a game in this price range, is a bit disappointing when you have to help yourself from elsewhere...</p><h2 style="text-align: left;">Zoo: no children allowed</h2><p>I can only recommend Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game to a very specific group of board gamers who regularly meet in "closed company", play challenging pieces and enjoy dense strategies. Because it's a game with virtually no randomness, it's purely about understanding the systems and gradually mastering and using them, which you'll demonstrate in the winning strategy.</p><p>After the first few games, you'll find that the lion and otter are over-powered animals that you want to have from the very first round, and you're already thinking about where to place the food stalls (or not even thinking, because you're using the optimal layout from the last game). In a closed group, where each player has equal experience with the game, it's a thrilling, evenly matched competition where you each know what the ideal zoo should look like and you have to really tactically market the animals to make your plans happen.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyx_yuW95Y67CEeZA5E6nLjS8Dw1tmwvD8Cgd9h63HgC5_z7BUa0HiJ2OFxsIg-0lnxhe6DyNcOse2zL0rQe7dlSdxaI6cvPyNqEVlKuJRi1cDb_GSg6NfwkD8gUpNXI8r_yuNJQZGJRPcmFoZjrRLeViX_YPVficYgbPweIV-6YyGJrKkf4yRoIZbN88l/s4604/IMG_20231016_132035_edit_73788664584611.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2587" data-original-width="4604" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyx_yuW95Y67CEeZA5E6nLjS8Dw1tmwvD8Cgd9h63HgC5_z7BUa0HiJ2OFxsIg-0lnxhe6DyNcOse2zL0rQe7dlSdxaI6cvPyNqEVlKuJRi1cDb_GSg6NfwkD8gUpNXI8r_yuNJQZGJRPcmFoZjrRLeViX_YPVficYgbPweIV-6YyGJrKkf4yRoIZbN88l/w640-h360/IMG_20231016_132035_edit_73788664584611.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>But throwing a newbie in with the experienced players is just beating a dead horse, at least for the first few games. By the very logic of the matter, this is not a relaxing game to pull out for an evening with friends, let alone a family who may be logically tempted by building a zoo, but it's where it hits a nasty patch of difficulty.</p><p>It's no comfort that for some reason the authors have thought to print the scoring board and the exchange on A3-sized cardboard boards, so the game takes up many times more space on the table than would realistically be needed. So you really need a proper family dining table to play on.</p><div><div>On the other hand, the components are top quality, as befits a game in this price range. Although the beautiful wooden animal figures are easily interchangeable, especially if you're looking for a primate for example, they all have a similar silhouette and come in different shades of grey...</div><div><br /></div><h2 style="text-align: left;">Verdict:</h2><div>Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game is an interesting zoo building game with exciting games. It has too many different mechanisms, which locks it out from less experienced players and families, but it can target them with the theme. When it finally gets into your blood, though, it offers all players at the table the same, really evenly matched games where the better strategist really wins, because you can't use the excuse of luck here.</div></div><div><br /></div><div><div>Also, if you find this article helpful, <a href="https://ko-fi.com/potan" target="_blank">you can just buy me coffee</a>. :) </div><div><br /></div><div>Originally published in <a href="https://www.zestolu.cz/deskovky/zoo-tycoon-the-board-game-recenze-adaptace-pocitacove-klasiky-pro-narocne-570055" target="_blank">Czech on the ZeStolu portal</a>. Well, yours historian & wargamer have answers for it! </p><p>The Battle of Gaugamela took place in 331 BC between the forces of Alexander the Great of Macedon and King Darius III of Persia. It was a decisive battle in Alexander's conquest of the Persian Empire. The battle resulted in a decisive victory for Alexander, leading to the fall of the Persian Empire and establishing Alexander's dominance in the region.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="474" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/79Fjzp6pFCk" width="571" youtube-src-id="79Fjzp6pFCk"></iframe></div><p>Alexander is a 2004 historical epic film directed by Oliver Stone, depicting the life of Alexander the Great, a legendary ancient Macedonian king and military commander. The film stars Colin Farrell in the title role, alongside Angelina Jolie, Val Kilmer, and Jared Leto. It follows Alexander's rise to power, his conquests across the known world, and his struggles with his personal demons. Despite a star-studded cast and ambitious scope, the film received mixed reviews from critics and was a commercial disappointment. However, it remains notable for its attempt to portray the complex figure of Alexander and his impact on history.</p><p>___________________________________________</p><p>If you enjoyed this video and my content, please <a href="https://ko-fi.com/potan" target="_blank">consider supporting me on Kofi</a>!</p><p>Or become <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCS_e1KVkuo8y1mLwEVI3i9g/join" target="_blank">my Youtube Channel member</a>!</p><div id="gtx-trans" style="left: 69px; position: absolute; top: 1285.4px;"><div class="gtx-trans-icon"></div></div>Potanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07088017444911956449noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1505582236897560310.post-77645261791534283012024-02-18T10:43:00.001+01:002024-02-18T10:44:32.770+01:00Medieval: Jan Žižka - review of the family game accompanying the movie<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlD4wz_oTS8XpHnqk9yg_6bcuUgB__CpvTAevqAsQlldpfZbETp5o6o0tLyTFojwDpriiIg9QobxaIUN0iOob3am88LYMlct4nyO1iyR4RIKM20qwvJDq7MYbkAwYKKflI5AShCBPWsXD5yPScyd-at0KdCCpPo5CboOTLr7wC3m76Fw36mfK1WITxL5M1/s4604/IMG_20231115_095103_edit_681048324178167.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2587" data-original-width="4604" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlD4wz_oTS8XpHnqk9yg_6bcuUgB__CpvTAevqAsQlldpfZbETp5o6o0tLyTFojwDpriiIg9QobxaIUN0iOob3am88LYMlct4nyO1iyR4RIKM20qwvJDq7MYbkAwYKKflI5AShCBPWsXD5yPScyd-at0KdCCpPo5CboOTLr7wC3m76Fw36mfK1WITxL5M1/w640-h360/IMG_20231115_095103_edit_681048324178167.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>The 2022 star-studded Czech film Jan Žižka (or Medieval for international distribution) received mixed reviews from audiences and critics. And while it didn't live up to its ambitions as a globally successful big budget film, it was given the complementary features of a true Western big budget film.<br /></p><p>We'll have to wait for the video game Žižka, but the board game from Albi was released just in time for Christmas 2023. I'm not going to lie - I went into the game Jan Žižka: Medieval by Petr Vojtěch and Jindřich Pavlásek thinking that it would probably be some quick-fire crap that wants to ride on the "popularity" of the brand, as it sometimes happens with these games. But to my great and pleasant surprise, it's a really good game!</p><p>I'd describe it as feeling like a kind of light Talisman with Žižka. Each of the 1 to 4 players (the game has a solo mode) controls one of the movie's heroes, who starts with a bunch of companions, and your goal is simply to accumulate 30 victory points. These are earned by walking around the map and completing tasks, of which there are several types and depending on their type you have to roll the necessary symbols on the dice.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFHgyCvwRIqXwOQ-WWE4TZKPsLnRVPkJiUPVETedyRUUBpiP1d729UXaPGazWyMBt3atQy6ld3D1tKkGCHgHh3XrZ_pXKrkjglN76FP5RInmkmiOhUTX0WGwg8XHdTaHbTarWraFXixP3alFaKP-_mDcoOA_Q-zyP8-7niKHdj8QLPBhkByccawaZgkWQ3/s4604/IMG_20231115_094835.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2587" data-original-width="4604" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFHgyCvwRIqXwOQ-WWE4TZKPsLnRVPkJiUPVETedyRUUBpiP1d729UXaPGazWyMBt3atQy6ld3D1tKkGCHgHh3XrZ_pXKrkjglN76FP5RInmkmiOhUTX0WGwg8XHdTaHbTarWraFXixP3alFaKP-_mDcoOA_Q-zyP8-7niKHdj8QLPBhkByccawaZgkWQ3/w640-h360/IMG_20231115_094835.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>Yes, symbols, not numbers. The game is fully pictogrammed and thus suitable for children (or foreigners who don't speak Czech). So if you go to a town where there is a talking bubble symbol, you know you have to roll talking on the dice; if there is a sword, there will be fighting; if there is money, you will have to pay.</p><div><div>This allows you to decide in advance where to go on the map, perhaps taking into account the abilities of your character or the squad you recruit during the game (each character can have its own special ability, or you can play a balanced variant with identical abilities). For example, if you have combat bonuses, there's no point in going to the monastery to chat, and vice versa...</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgudrIR5qc0p1GfC3EcX1rJLS3Sc8o1Y5dKdfdkZKrAaEPLpqkAERIyY4x-YYFGIwp8YTwdBhCpYW_eLLNvWVTWbLCozxtvvwQQOlBhbXxesJSj_V9zOkzsTgGAF7Uh26haMYNNqb-A-QqWNWT3pV4E8-k3Ck8nKs-Z12slaCDB0OrK0QfPNyEFnRSMt0OX/s4604/IMG_20231115_094752.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2587" data-original-width="4604" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgudrIR5qc0p1GfC3EcX1rJLS3Sc8o1Y5dKdfdkZKrAaEPLpqkAERIyY4x-YYFGIwp8YTwdBhCpYW_eLLNvWVTWbLCozxtvvwQQOlBhbXxesJSj_V9zOkzsTgGAF7Uh26haMYNNqb-A-QqWNWT3pV4E8-k3Ck8nKs-Z12slaCDB0OrK0QfPNyEFnRSMt0OX/w640-h360/IMG_20231115_094752.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>So you know what the events will revolve around, but you don't know how difficult they will be. But there's no need to despair, just roll a portion of the events for a partial reward, and if you don't roll anything after all, the game will still give you a universal luck token "for your efforts", which you can later redeem for any success. This is the game's way of making sure that every player is constantly moving somewhere, and not getting left behind just because they're unlucky. </div><div><br /></div><div>In addition to the main quests, which are constantly changing on the map, there are a few other activities in the game. You can try sieging castles, taking part in a knight tournament or gaining the favour of the king, for a chance to use a special die - Wenceslaus's can "speak better" and Zikmund's can pour gold for a change. In addition, for some events, you can get a warrant for your character's arrest for your actions, where other players will start chasing you with the prospect of a reward, which is also the only time in the game where players go at each other's throats.</div></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9kcKxu4niraaDw_o0xUP-gog0dePDhOCGeSwUiTVKK5sFKfkNlm7MThpafnMHfmoflPusLlgnXUFTSF9syCSaPZVUTOeKXRCVZdzO2K4B9-bEFP6IPoWwbLEqJ2pSEf2M4sU9IqLDOfdJ8kUkfsQbRhSUfz50V-nIAEyG3PkQIuAhMWEqmHlcafDj-Ghy/s4604/IMG_20231115_094802.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2587" data-original-width="4604" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9kcKxu4niraaDw_o0xUP-gog0dePDhOCGeSwUiTVKK5sFKfkNlm7MThpafnMHfmoflPusLlgnXUFTSF9syCSaPZVUTOeKXRCVZdzO2K4B9-bEFP6IPoWwbLEqJ2pSEf2M4sU9IqLDOfdJ8kUkfsQbRhSUfz50V-nIAEyG3PkQIuAhMWEqmHlcafDj-Ghy/w640-h360/IMG_20231115_094802.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><div>As far as the graphic design of Jan Žižka: Medieval is concerned, some of the pieces are probably meant to simulate medieval illuminations, but it's about halfway between an illumination and a child's painting. Likewise, the companion cards look like photos blown through some horrible filter. But the figures for the main four heroes are very nice. They have nice sharp details, they really look like they're from a good western game and like actors from a movie, which can't be said about the cards at all. </div><div><br /></div><div>In a nutshell, the basic mechanics of the game are really simple: players run around the map, completing tasks by rolling dice to collect money and victory points. Whoever does best wins over time. It's really simple without being complicated, but here it's really true that simplicity is power. It's just simple fun that doesn't surprise you after the first time you play it, so you don't have to flip through the rules.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh29lRVkcveobVMbuMFPxPbhgFj-GEmE3Vx8F3GFm0kXp_1fS57f-xzECdg4t-j449i6OKJwj0wPgbnlPbbjZtFR0tfeZj4AVGNormL182XjvegGbzJmrpMmRsKyhFlLAOzpgZBBXpOt-ikTzPvZHOb37uHFJWA2gnODpOgiYMWOtG7kzqMJ5QFA-IuwTkG/s4604/IMG_20231115_094739.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2587" data-original-width="4604" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh29lRVkcveobVMbuMFPxPbhgFj-GEmE3Vx8F3GFm0kXp_1fS57f-xzECdg4t-j449i6OKJwj0wPgbnlPbbjZtFR0tfeZj4AVGNormL182XjvegGbzJmrpMmRsKyhFlLAOzpgZBBXpOt-ikTzPvZHOb37uHFJWA2gnODpOgiYMWOtG7kzqMJ5QFA-IuwTkG/w640-h360/IMG_20231115_094739.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>Plus, one game takes about 30 minutes in two players and each additional player then adds a quarter of an hour, so at full strength you're in for a nice hour. And thanks to the pictograms and the relative accessibility of the rules, it's a great game for a hangout or outing to play with friends who aren't hardcore board gamers. On top of that, it's suitable for kids - the box says 12 and up, but I think you can play Žižka with kids a few years younger than that.</div></div><div><h2 style="text-align: left;">Verdict:</h2><div>Jan Žižka: Medieval is an unexpectedly fun game that, while tied to the movie license, works on its own as an uncomplicated, entertaining board game in which you take on a medieval hero who must carve out a name for himself on the map. It's a fast-paced game suitable for beginners and younger players as well as advanced players, with its simple principles and dice rattling properly relaxing.</div></div><div><br /></div><div><p>Also, if you find this article helpful, you can just <a href="https://ko-fi.com/potan" target="_blank">buy me coffee.</a> :) </p><p>Originally published in <a href="https://www.zestolu.cz/deskovky/jan-zizka-medieval-recenze-rodinne-hry-doprovazejici-film-569115" target="_blank">Czech on the ZeStolu portal</a>. The game area takes up an entire dining room table, there's a bunch of figures, some of which are in the lower tens of centimetres in height, and all of this results in a staggering price tag, with just the base game starting at over 170 USD.</p><p>It's great for people who want a game for the whole evening that takes up the whole table and half the cupboard and don't mind paying that kind of money for it. Well, for those who don't have that kind of space or don't want to spend too much, there's Cthulhu Wars: Duel, which is literally a minimalist version of the great Cthulhu Wars.</p><h2 style="text-align: left;">Smaller scale, same rules</h2><p>Just like in Big Brother, players take on the role of elder gods, or rather their cults, with one goal in mind: world domination. That is, the world is controlled in the original game, whereas in Duel it's "only" Massachusetts, but you'll find all the "Lovecraftian" locations like Innsmouth, Arkham, Dunwich, etc. (and the developers also state in the rules that it's no problem to play this smaller game on the world map).<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhagWVMett5qwKnxOl12sKdhYmtI-4_MqsjK2wFlH3BMhzWOaWgTc0Js8_S-SHIMXvzYRk4-7UmgEcbdFGDYIGUNc2mVeJk-bEPO4T1jqWQKCkkdGNrx1n2xpCZwTX_BihHo2RCfuc3YuEZqpQT1dUBBTjgYZtD89xx4oiwpLrH5vQ65P_rg0zZLLD0-EIx/s4551/IMG_20231021_142256_edit_398487911730278.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2555" data-original-width="4551" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhagWVMett5qwKnxOl12sKdhYmtI-4_MqsjK2wFlH3BMhzWOaWgTc0Js8_S-SHIMXvzYRk4-7UmgEcbdFGDYIGUNc2mVeJk-bEPO4T1jqWQKCkkdGNrx1n2xpCZwTX_BihHo2RCfuc3YuEZqpQT1dUBBTjgYZtD89xx4oiwpLrH5vQ65P_rg0zZLLD0-EIx/w640-h360/IMG_20231021_142256_edit_398487911730278.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>Players gradually control areas on the map using monsters or cultists, building gates on them from which they summon other monsters that fight each other for territory and victory points from slain enemies. The action points required to activate units are in turn generated by the number of gates controlled and cultists alive. </p><p>From a gameplay perspective, players are forced to constantly advance across the map and kill enemies. And that's basically the whole mechanic of the game. Some monsters have even more special abilities, each cult has its own special rules, you unlock unique grimoires of spells/abilities, but in a nutshell the game is simply about moving pawns around the map, building gates, summoning monsters and beating the crap out of enemies with their help.</p><p>Even the combat isn't tactically complex or rules-heavy - monsters have a given number of attacks based on their summoning cost, equal to the number of dice rolls they make to hurt their opponents on a 5+. Nothing complicated, which is unfortunately true of the whole game.</p><h2 style="text-align: left;">A straightforward battle of two deities</h2><p>Great Cthulhu Wars works nicely, Cthulhu Wars: Duel not so much. The Great Cthulhu Wars is played with 3 to 8 players, which has the advantage of having more cults on the map, thus more different special abilities, spells and monsters manifest. In the basic duel there is only Cthulhu (well, it's hard to imagine Cthulhu Wars without him) and Shub-Niggurath, a black goat with thousands of young.</p><p>So there are only two of them, and each has a subjectively different difficulty for me. Cthulhu is perfectly simple and straightforward, where you just crawl around the map and use the Ancient One himself. Even the special abilities in the spell grimoire are unlocked purely for making the game flow, so the player doesn't have to put in any extra effort. On the other hand, the Goat player has to take a real spin around and it takes several games to fully and properly understand what to do and not just get run over by Cthulhu. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCP5qNnh3kGWoGZqcjFl1HzaSVSTDtK4aXzw5NmSwjbIdrfbmG9Mpts8Kqp5PC8N1nSFGMx1zur01haSeCCWPcuJMhRd5XeZiNuDWU2mvy4ADmYLsB9NY3EF-xqXkrpqgPyS_CXzP8heWVT7rsNiao6Zy5I1al9de4dNhDVJjg8lJElvlfLYaAg2cHwRP-/s4602/IMG_20231021_142337_edit_398516281450007.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2586" data-original-width="4602" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCP5qNnh3kGWoGZqcjFl1HzaSVSTDtK4aXzw5NmSwjbIdrfbmG9Mpts8Kqp5PC8N1nSFGMx1zur01haSeCCWPcuJMhRd5XeZiNuDWU2mvy4ADmYLsB9NY3EF-xqXkrpqgPyS_CXzP8heWVT7rsNiao6Zy5I1al9de4dNhDVJjg8lJElvlfLYaAg2cHwRP-/w640-h360/IMG_20231021_142337_edit_398516281450007.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>Likewise, the fact that there are only two players on the map results in the complete social aspect of the game strategy falling out. There's no longer a need to agree with Carl to bully Paul because he gets too worked up and subsequently doesn't take advantage of Kate, who was standing on the sidelines waiting for her opportunity the whole time.</p><p>Now there's only two of you, and you're going at each other from the first round, which means you're practically pushing each other in the middle of the map, and that's practically the whole game. Once it's one-on-one, there's generally no way to stand back and wait, and so the game is just about taking squares and killing monsters. You have to go hard at your opponent from the start and go for the kill, or you'll lose crushingly.</p><h2 style="text-align: left;">The epic battle may one day blossom</h2><p>On top of that, the game has really small squares on the game board, so when you inevitably meet in the middle of the map after a few rounds, there's a bit of hell in knowing which pieces are where, because you can't see the lines demarcating the boundaries of the squares through them. This chaos is aided by the fact that the cardboard standee figures are unnecessarily large.</p><p>I can see why the "real, plastic figures" are different sizes - it can make the extra detail stand out. But printed cardboard is still just printed cardboard. And you might as well forget about using figures from your big Cthulhu Wars, because the Duel game boxes are simply too small for them.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi97ZPgXfpbe-5cXppsyMTgQvsDze8f9httdoUPd4uUq6n-zSDwG87WBfwAEtEqM8ZAZ9tADFZnvBBhNUSOAn4zTo-nUq2wpftCJ8faJJ3PHzT06GR7WluegZu-YB9ADOGjrcqp-0t5h-TmdRK6Y9DagyIja6JvdVKFgo3-BLczkzKkIhP8dGOvnAbGRji2/s4410/IMG_20231021_142212_edit_398451354715657.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2480" data-original-width="4410" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi97ZPgXfpbe-5cXppsyMTgQvsDze8f9httdoUPd4uUq6n-zSDwG87WBfwAEtEqM8ZAZ9tADFZnvBBhNUSOAn4zTo-nUq2wpftCJ8faJJ3PHzT06GR7WluegZu-YB9ADOGjrcqp-0t5h-TmdRK6Y9DagyIja6JvdVKFgo3-BLczkzKkIhP8dGOvnAbGRji2/w640-h360/IMG_20231021_142212_edit_398451354715657.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><p>Equally unfortunate is that the game only has 10 dice in the box. Ten is absurdly low even for just one player, let alone both. Sure, everyone probably has some extra dice at home, but it's just sad that players don't get the number of dice they need to start with and have to scavenge for them on the side. </p><p>As a result, the whole game doesn't feel like "Cthulhu Wars adapted for two players" at all, but more like "Cthulhu Wars forcefully grafted onto two-player play", and for me, the game sadly doesn't work in this state. More than a standalone game, it's more of a demonstration of how the mechanics of the big game work, i.e. an advertisement for it. All that might change when more expansions are on the market that bring more options, but for now it's just a weird variant of the great Cthulhu Wars.</p><h2 style="text-align: left;">Verdict:</h2><p>Ctulhu Wars: Duel strives to be a " pocket-sized" and more accessible replacement for the big two-player Cthulhu Wars, using virtually identical mechanics. However, the rules that work in multiplayer fail in the two-player version. The game has virtually no tension and there is no opportunity to build strategy. You just move around the squares and whoever rolls the dice better wins. Maybe this will change with expansions, where there will be more maps and cults with their own rules and the necessary variation, but at the moment Cthulhu Wars: Duel is a bland, neutered variation on the great Cthulhu Wars.</p><p>Also, if you find this article helpful, you can just <a href="https://ko-fi.com/potan" target="_blank">buy me coffee.</a> :) </p><p>Originally published in <a href="https://www.zestolu.cz/deskovky/cthulhu-wars-duel-recenze-chudsiho-bratricka-kultovni-deskovky-567777" target="_blank">Czech on the ZeStolu portal</a>.
