Black Seas - USS Essex Unboxing

Today we take a look at USS Essex - 36 gun frigate that participated in the Quasi-War with France, the First Barbary War, and the War of 1812. So famous, that Patrick O'Brian adapted the story of Essex's attack on British whalers for his novel The Far Side of the World. Sadly, for political/financial reasons Essex was changed to USA made Frechn ship in movie adaptation Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World with Russell Crowe, which wou probably all know. :)

So whats is in this Black Seas box from Warlord games? Resin and metal parts for the ship, reference card and wake maker, acetone ratlines, rigging thread and set of Frigate (and brigs) sails and American flags.

So content that you would expect. As all resin/metal ships for Black Seas, the ship itself is one solid chunk of resin with additional metal bits - masts and other accesories.

To my suprise, NONE of the masts came bended or warped - everything was on, in fine condition.

As you can see, the resin hull has incredible level of details on gun ports, figurehead, etc. Way crispier details, then at plastic kits.

Being one of the "wave 2" resin ships, it has even better details than original "first wave" resin ships like USS Constitution or 1st rates. And even those were fantastic!

Being "just ordinary 36 gun frigate" its way smaller then Super Frigate Constition, as should be and as you can see at pic bellow.

And futher bellow we have pic of both released resin american frigates with generic plastic frigate hull.

And as you can see, Essex is modelwise basicaly same size as the generic fifth rate.

Overall its lovely lovely kit and great addition to any American fleet. Due its size, its even no problem to use it in games just as "generic frigate" with different model, when youre at event where are named ships not allowed.
