Review: Patrick Miniatures - 15mm Arab Urban Buildings

It is said that in wargaming, even in a two-player game, there are always three armies on the table. One of player A, one of player B and the third is the table itself, or rather the terrains on it. That's why today we're going to take a look at the Patrick from Patrick Miniatures. Patrick is from Germany, which is a huge advantage for us in the EU, because we don't have to worry about any customs duties or other extra fees and taxes when we order. As well, the terrains will arrive within a couple of days.

Patrik designs and creates his own 3D renderings of terrains for 3D printing. These terrains can either be purchased as .stl if you have a printer at home and print them yourself, or you can order them directly from Patrik printed like I did, if you don't have your own printer at home.

The set we're looking at is a quartet of "Arab" buildings, inteded for modern wargaming, but without problem usable on the North African battlefields of WWII. I myself acquire them to play "Cold War" AK-47 Republic. While most of these "Arabic sets" are said to go back further into the past to the Middle Ages, these buildings already contain a few modern features like gutters or "modern" doors. So it's up to you if you're put off by these details, or if they don't matter to you and no one will notice anyway.

And since they're on AKs, they're in 15mm. But Patrik can make them in 1/72 or "classic" 28mm. And since they're 3D prints, if you buy STL, you may very well be able to print them even smaller.

As for the models, as you can see in the photos, they are full of details and little things that make them stand out and they are not just "boring" shoeboxes without texture as these African buildings often are, although that is mainly a problem with MDF terrains.

If you play games with true line of sight, or don't like soldiers yawning on rooftops, all the buildings are openable by floors and you can put soldiers in them. The inside of the buildings may not have sculpted interior details, but that's too much for one to ask for the price. Instead, though, the buildings have a great peg system in the corners, so you won't have a floor sliding down onto your figures when you're banging a table somewhere or manipulating floors.

Although houses have floors and can in theory be rearranged, due to the different base sizes, floors are only rearranged within a particular house. And that's only by the style of making a three-story into a two or one-story. It's not much, but it's still some extra variability. Plus, if you buy STL files, you can print as many storey houses as you want at home in theory.

Verdict

Great terrains, at a good price. For us in the EU, with the added benefit of fast shipping and no tariffs. The print quality is awesome and you can even see on the buildings that they were created by the player for the gaming with them. I can't recommend them enough. Personally, I haven't had better 3D printed buildings in my hands yet.
